This 121-page full-color book is a condensed history of Highlands, Horse Cove and Scaly Mountain, illustrated with photographs that I have made over my 41 years living here. The 240 photos include historical sites, homes, businesses and churches as well as rivers, mountains, valley views and waterfalls. Also included are samples of local wildlife, birds and wildflowers. Read about the town’s founding and early years, with fascinating tidbits of history on various people and places. There is a section on the Cherokee and early settlements before Highlands was founded, such as Clear Creek and Shortoff. Read about moonshine in the mountains, Joe Webb’s famous log cabins, the Hudson Library, the Highlands Biological Station, and Highlands’ Country Clubs. Several aerial photos give the reader a bird’s eye view of Highlands, Satulah and Whiteside Mountain. From Crane Stables’ barn to the Bird Barn and Helen’s Barn, the book is chock full of interesting features of area history. Published in 2023. The cover is a “hybrid” laminated heavy cardstock.
